A crane collapse on the East Side of Manhattan has killed at least four people and injured many others.

The construction crane fell 15 stories tall toppled over at a construction site and smashed into a block of residential buildings Saturday.

Fire Department officials say at least four people have died in the collapse, and a rescue operation is under way to see whether there are people trapped in the rubble.

The falling wreckage appears to have pulverized at least one small, brick apartment building. An apartment tower and others in the area have been evacuated.

Rescue crews are on the scene and witnesses have reported a strong smell of gas in the area.
