Prisoners escape from Afghanistan jail after Taliban bombing

About 870 prisoners escaped from the main prison in southern Afghanistan after a Taliban bomb and rocket attack knocked the main gate off the prison.

Authorities said 390 Taliban prisoners were among those who fled the prison during the attack late Friday.

"We admit it," Brig. Gen. Carlos Branco said. "Their guys did the job properly in that sense, but it does not have a strategic impact. We should not draw any conclusion about the deterioration of the military operations in the area. We should not draw any conclusion about the strength of the Taliban."

The complex attack included a truck bombing at the main gate, a suicide bomber who struck a back wall and rockets fired from inside the prison courtyard, setting off a series of explosions that rattled Kandahar, the country's second biggest city.

Remembering journalist and leader Tim Russert

rememberingtimrussert.jpg

As a journalism student, I always dreamed of being where Tim Russert was. Who knew that I would end writing a crappy gossip blog, but you know...

Then when working for a CBS affiliate in Knoxville, Tennessee I watched Tim write "Florida, Florida, Florida" on that small white board over on NBC as Dan Rather was comparing George Bush to a tornado in a trailer park. I remember wishing I was on their network, lol!

The point is, that Tim Russert has touched so many people. He was not just a journalist, he was a father and he was hard working American. He is the type of person that you want your kids to grow and be like.

On this day, we should remember all that Tim Russert has accomplished.

In addition to his work at NBC News Time Magazine named him one 2008's most influential people. Russert won numerous awards and was also the author of two bestselling books.

He is survived by his wife, Vanity Fair writer Maureen Orth, and their son, Luke. His father "Big Russ" lives in Buffalo. He is in his late 80's.

RIP sportscaster Charlie Jones. He was 77.

charliejonesdead.pngMORE MOURNING. Another broadcasting legend has died. Charlie Jones, the deep-voiced sportscaster whose career as a play-by-play announcer spanned 38 years for ABC and NBC, has died. He was 77. Jones died of a heart attack Thursday at his home in the La Jolla district of San Diego. NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol called Charlie "one of the great pioneers of NBC Sports. His work in particular on the NFL, golf and the Olympics left a lasting legacy." NBC also lost Washington Bureau Chief and "Meet the Press" host Tim Russert.

BREAKING: NBC's Tim Russert suddenly dies at 58

RIPtimrussert.jpgBREAKING NEWS. NBC News is reporting that their Washington Bureau Chief Tim Russert has suddenly died. Russert, the host of "Meet the Press," evidently died of a heart attack. We don't have a lot of details on Tim's death, but he was definitely a well respected journalist known for his unconventional "dumbed down" news reporting style. He was 58 years old. Timothy John Russert Jr. was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on May 7, 1950. He was a graduate of Canisius High School, John Carroll University and the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. Russert was a member of the bar in New York and the District of Columbia.

Another Vick in trouble with the law, this time little brother Marcus

marcusvickarrested.jpg

Being stupid and causing trouble must run in the Vick family.

Dog-killer Michael Vick's younger brother Marcus is a jail bird too! Marcus Vick was picked up early Friday morning and charge with driving under the influence and eluding police.

Lil' Vick signed as a free agent receiver with the Miami Dolphins after a troubled career at Virginia Tech. He was released by the Dolphins in 2007. Again, just like his loser brother Michael.

Cops say an uniformed bicycle patrol officer saw Marcus and a female involved in an altercation in a car. The officer asked if the couple needed his assistance, then he asked Vick for his driver's license. Police say Vick then sped away, but was stopped minutes later.

Marcus failed a field sobriety test and was charged with DUI, misdemeanor eluding police, reckless driving, driving on the wrong side of the road and driving on a suspended license. The passenger, Delicia Cordon of Miami, Fla., was charged with being drunk in public.

Vick was released from jail at 6 a.m. Friday on $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court Monday.

Oh and by the way, these could be the worst two mug shots EVER!

dcpoweroutage.jpg

The lights are back on in downtown Washington, DC after a Friday morning power outage.

The White House was even running on back-up generators, but the Department of Homeland Security said there was no threat of terrorism.

Pepco and WMATA said they did not know if the power outage and the fire were related.

Zimbabwe ruling party tries to stop opposition with taxes, arrests

zimbabwearrests.jpg

Zimbabwe's ruling party is doing every thing they can to hold on to President Robert Mugabe's 28-year reign even arresting the opposition and taxing imported media that might disagree with Mugabe.

Zimbabwe has two daily papers, both controlled by the government, and no private radio or television stations.

One of those state-run publicantions, the Herald newspaper, reported that the new import duties followed concerns by Mugabe's government over "the flood of hostile foreign newspapers coming into Zimbabwe."

Right now, Zimbabwe residents resort to pirate radio stations and imported magazines for unbiased news reporting.

Police also arrested an opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) lawmaker for a second time in recent days Saturday over accusations of "incitement to public violence".

Authorities have also detained Mugabe's opponent Morgan Tsvangirai (pictured above) twice this week alone.

Their run-off election is set for June 27th.

Judge halts return of polygamous children

polygamommies.jpg

A judge has slowed down the return of over 400 children to their parents on a polygamist ranch in Texas, CBS News is reporting.

The Texas Supreme Court judge in the polygamist sect child custody case refused to sign the order releasing the children until after all the lawyers and their clients could agree on it.

Before the children can return home, a few conditions must be met. Parents must be photographed when they pick up their child. Parents must agree to unannounced home visits as Child Protective Services continues to investigate sexual abuse. Children cannot leave the state of Texas or even travel 60 miles without permission.

Not all of the children would be returned to their parents under these conditions. Texas Child Protective Services will retain custody of a handful of girls that they believe were younger than the legal age of 16 when they married or became pregnant.

The polyga-mommies wanted their kids back this weekend, but the court has encouraged slowing things down to make sure all of the bases are covered.

New York City needs to take an independent look at Building's Department

cranecollapse2.jpg

With a crane towering over my head in a new hotel that is being constructed in my lower Manhattan neighborhood, I write this plea to the city of New York.

These crane collapses are ridiculous. This is not a natural disaster. We should be able to control this situation. Unfortunately, the city continues to fail in this regard.

It is time that Mayor Bloomberg put his foot down and grab control of this situation. An independent panel needs to be formed. It should consist of at least a dozen members ranging from politicians to average citizens.

This panel could offer an independent look at how well the Department of Buildings is doing with issuing citations and follow-up inspections.

I would even volunteer to serve on the committee. Something MUST be done!

In this photo: A construction crane collapsed Friday on New York's Upper East Side, smashing into a 23-story apartment building before crashing onto the street below and leaving at least one person dead.

Is this alien video enough proof of extraterrestrials?

alienvideoscreencap.jpgA Denver man held a press conference on Friday to try and prove that aliens do exist. Jeff Peckman says he has video shot by Stan Romanek that proves the existence of extraterrestrials.

"It starts out with a digital camera looking out across the room toward a window," Peckman described the video to ABC News. "There's a couple of flashes of light. After a few seconds, there is a small head clearly rising above a sill, panning the room, blinking its eyes, all slowly."

The media was evidently required to sign a waiver form saying they would not film any part of the alien video.

Peckman is proposing an 18-member Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission for Denver. He says that the video will eventually be released to the public in an upcoming documentary.

Connecticut basketball coach Jim Calhoun treated for cancer again

jimcalhouncancertreatment.jpg

Connecticut basketball coach Jim Calhoun is being treated for another round of skin cancer but doesn't expect that to affect his returning to the bench this fall for his 22nd season with the Huskies.

"I want to coach basketball at UConn," Calhoun said Friday. "At this moment I love what I do and feel very, very comfortable in doing that."

Calhoun will undergo six weeks of radiation treatments next month at the UConn Health Center to minimize any chance of the cancer coming back. His doctors, who joined the coach for the press conference, told Calhoun there will be short-term side effects from the radiation. Doctors say they expect Calhoun to return to his normal lifestyle, including coaching.

"I have one more step to go," Calhoun said. "I feel much, much better, thank God."

Calhoun said doctors determined last month that a lump in the upper right side of his neck near the jaw line was squamous cell cancer.

The grand theater at Lincoln Center has been cited for sanitary violations by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Evidently the Metropolitan Opera has mice!

Meanwhile, stay away from the Met or watch your feet!

Strike up a win for the polygamists.

A court ruled that the State of Texas had no right to seize several hundred children from a polygamist compound.

The Third Court of Appeals in Austin ruled that the state offered "legally and factually insufficient" grounds for the "extreme" measure of removing all children from the ranch, from babies to teenagers.

That doesn't mean the kids are going rig
