Pet adoption success story!

PET FOLLOW-UP REPORT

A few weeks ago we told you about two dogs named Hope and Snoop who were looking for a good home, and we have some great news. Hope and Snoop have been adopted.

We got an email from the person coordinating their search for a new home, and we're excited to say that these two dogs are going to live on a 25 acres of land in western Pennsylvania with a couple who runs a home pet grooming business.

Thank you to everyone who helped with this!

Here's an exceprt from the e-mail I received:
"The emails and calls we received about these dogs have been unbelievable. We got emails from South Dakota, Washington state, Virginia, Long Island, Albany, Massachusetts, etc. and the outpouring of concern about these two wonderful animals is so heartwarming."

We'll definitely keep you posted. We have another great pet to introduce you to later this week!

Looking for a family pet or two?

HopeandSnoop.JPG

There are thousands of pets across the country looking for a good home. We hope to help these pets find a great home, and we want to help you find the perfect pet.

Meet Hope and Snoop. These two dogs have lived a remarkable life, but now they need a new home.

Hope and Snoop currently live at a "half-way house" where they have been living and working for years. These two elderly dogs have served as loyal companions to those who have come through their doors, but now the treatment facility where they live has been closed.

According to the e-mail we received,

"Snoop is 15 years old - he is a husky mix - he was rescued by the halfway house staff from a crack house 14 years ago. Snoop is very guarded at first when meeting new people, but he does warm up to everyone. Over 1,000 men have gone through the halfway house in the past 14 years and there was never a problem with Snoop. He is just very leery of anyone new. Hope is 10 and an unknown mixed breed.

Hope is very sweet and loves everyone right from the start. They are a bonded pair who have been together since they rescued Hope from an abandoned building when she was just a puppy. They have not been around other dogs, but have always been around cats, with no problems. They both have arthritis and Snoop has cataracts also.

They are neutered/spayed and up-to-date on their shots. They have seen/been around children but only when children came to the halfway house to visit their fathers, so it was not often."

If you're in the New York City or northern New Jersey areas and are interested in adopting Snoop and/or Hope, please contact Lindy at linfork@aol.com immediately. Time is running out!

Meet the world's first green dog!

greenpuppy.jpgBelieve it or not, the world's first green puppy has been born in New Orleans.

The puppy was born last week, and he is perfectly heathly. He's just green.

Veterinarians say the dog is going to be just fine, but he won't stay green for ever. As the puppy grows up, the vets say he will likely be white or brown.

How did it happen?

"Sometimes, when a puppy is born, the amniotic fluid mixes with the placenta and dyes the coat of the puppy and it almost always happens to very light colored puppies," says Anna Zorrilla with the Louisiana SPCA.

"There are not health concerns," Zorrilla said. "It's really just a discoloration in the birthing process."

Well good for the little fella! It's not easy being green (or so I hear!)

PETA wants changes in horse racing

petawantschange.jpg

After this weekend's Kentucky Derby, a horse by the name of Eight Belles had to be put after she collapsed on Saturday.

Now the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is calling for a change in how race horses are treated.

In a letter to the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority (KHRA), PETA president Ingrid Newkirk urged regulations that were described as a "bare minimum for horse safety:"

-Thoroughbreds under the age of 3 should not be permitted to race.

-Synthetic surfaces or turf — which result in fewer injuries — should be mandated at all race courses.

-Whipping should be banned.

PETA representatives plan to protest at the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority's Lexington, Ky., headquarters on Tuesday.

The Socialite Report was on location Saturday in Hoboken, New Jersey for the 'Carnivale of the Dogs' sponsored by Commerce Bank and Hoboken Unleashed.

We spent the day at the pet carnival with the folks from Hoboken Unleashed and Bark Place NYC as the doggies gobbled down treats from Angie's Jollies Doggie Barkery and got complimentary nail clippings from the Unleashed spa.

dixiechicksm.jpg

The Liberty Humane Society was also on hand with Dixie and some other dogs who are up for adoption. If you're interested in adopting Dixie, let me know.

Thanks to everyone who came out to say hello! We look forward to being 'on location more' and expanding our canine report!

Website of the Week: StopPuppyMills.org

stoppuppymills.jpg

Today we launch a new feature on the Socialite Report. Each week, we will spotlight a website in our "Website of the Week" posting.

This week's website of the week is www.StopPuppyMills.org. The website was created to draw awareness to puppy mills and animal cruelty, a cause we hold near and dear here at Socialite Media.

What you can do...

1. Get an Education
Whether you're thinking about getting a dog, want to educate others about puppy mills or just want to learn more, check out more information on puppy mills and puppy buying:

2. Stop Puppy Mills on Your Website
Add a "Stop Puppy Mills" or "Puppy Buyers Guide" banner to your website, MySpace page, Facebook page or blog, and start educating visitors about the dangers of puppy mills and pet stores.

3. Assist With Ads
Help The HSUS place “Stop Puppy Mill” ads in national magazines and on billboards in communities around the country.

4. Get the Kit
The Dog Savers Kit has everything you’ll need to start spreading the word about puppy mills in your community, including printed materials, letter templates, tips for developing legislation and activity ideas. The kit is designed to help you discuss the puppy mill issue accurately and intelligently, whether speaking to friends and family or the local media. $3.00 each.

5. Forward to a Friend
Know someone who is thinking about bringing a puppy into their family? Send them a message with a link to the Stop Puppy Mills website so they can read our puppy buying tips, sign the pledge and learn more about puppy mills.

6. Lobby for Better Laws
Contact your federal and state legislators and let them know that you’re concerned about the inhumane treatment of dogs in puppy mills and want the puppy mill issue to be a priority for congress. Ask them to expand the reach of the Animal Welfare Act to include kennels that sell large numbers of puppies directly to the public and to ban the imports of puppies for resale.

7. Get “Stop Puppy Mills” Stuff
Spread the word about puppy mills wherever you go with stickers, t-shirts, bookmarks, dog collars and flyers.

8. Speak Up
Writing a letter to the editor of your local newspaper is a great way to get the word out about puppy mills in your community. Write your own version—a short, polite letter is most effective—or download a Microsoft Word version of the template that you can alter.

9. Furnish Your Vet With Flyers
Supply your vet or groomer’s office with informational flyers—“How to Buy a Puppy” and “How to Find a Good Dog Breeder”—designed to help potential pet owners avoid puppy mills.

10. Donate
Help The HSUS in our ongoing campaign to stop puppy mills. Please make a donation today.

Do what you can to help! I admit that have a designer "accessory" dog (meet Parker here). I purchased him five years, and he's my best friend. I don't, however, condone buying dogs from pet stores. Find a reputable breeder or, even better, adopt from a shelter.

Martha Stewart blogs about doggie death

marthastewartdogblog.jpg

One of Martha Stewart's beloved dogs, Kublai Khan Paw Paw Chow Chow Chow, died last week.

PageSix says that Martha wrote about the last days of the dog's life on her blog.

"I went outside for one last pee," she wrote in the dog's voice.

Stewart calls her best friend "elegant and kind and reserved and charming up until the very last moment. He was the only pet I ever had, with the exception of Blue Maximilian Chow Chow Chow, who was never disobedient, and never, ever, required me to raise my voice."

Martha is an animal lover and advocate. She has various farms at her home in Connecticut and two other dogs - French Bulldogs.

I can't imagine losing my little Parker! My heart goes out to Martha!

Gin the dancing dog early favorite in Britain's Got Talent

Britain's Got Talent might just go to the dogs this year. Literally.

The show stopper on this weekend's show was Gin the dancing dog.

Gin the dancing dog is definitely impressive. Even Simon Cowell seemed blown away!

For a competition that is usually contained to those who walk on two legs, Gin might actually stand a chance at winning the whole kit and caboodle on Britain's Got Talent!

BTdub- Simon Cowell is EVERYWHERE!

Michael Vick getting by in prison

Even though he should be put in a pit with other prisoners to see who dies first, Michael Vick is evidently playing football in prison. No joke!

Falcons owner Arthur Blank says that Vick is the prison team quarterback. This really shouldn't be allowed! He's a dog killer, so he gets to play football in prison? That doesn't seem like hard time to me.

Blank told the Daily News that Vick writes that he is also washing pots and pans for 12 cents an hour. Wow, he's making money too.

Prison doesn't seem half-bad!

Vick was sentenced to 23 months in December after pleading guilty to federal dogfighting charges.

Testimony in 'Lucas the dog' case brings some to tears

lucasthedog.jpgChris Barnett, a hillbilly from Tennessee, is on trial for animal cruelty accused of filing down his dog's teeth almost to the gums appeared in court on Tuesday.

At a preliminary hearing Tuesday in McMinnville (outside of Nashville), testimony about the abuse on Lucas the dog from an eye witness brought representatives of the Warren County Humane Association to tears.

"You don't teach a dog not to chew by beating him and then filing his teeth off," said General Sessions Court Judge Larry Ross. "It was just a sadistic beating."

If convicted of aggravated animal assault against Lucas, Barnett could be sentenced to two years in prison and fined $3,000. I think he should get life or the death penalty, but that's just me!

The district attorney says people from all over the country called in support of Lucas the dog.
